How to hide YouTube Shorts on desktop (and keep them hidden)

You open YouTube for one video. Half an hour later you're still scrolling Shorts.

There's no switch to turn them off on desktop. Here's what actually works.

The same homepage with the clip reel gone, and Cuttlefox confirming the change is saved and reapplies on every visit
A video site homepage with an autoplaying clip reel shelf, and the Cuttlefox panel with the request "Remove the clip reel from the homepage"
Drag to compare. One sentence removes a video shelf, and it stays gone on every visit.

YouTube's own options

  • "Not interested" on a Short. Slowly teaches YouTube to show you fewer.
  • The X on the Shorts shelf. When it appears, it hides the shelf for 30 days.
  • The Subscriptions feed. Fewer recommendations, but Shorts still show up.

Fine for a mild annoyance. To make Shorts actually disappear, you need an extension.

Extensions that remove them

Ad-blocker filters

Upside: Free, if your ad blocker supports custom rules.

Downside: You hunt down element names, and redesigns break them.

A “hide Shorts” extension

Upside: Install it and you’re done.

Downside: Does one thing. When YouTube changes, you wait for an update.

Cuttlefox

Upside: You pick what goes: the shelf, the sidebar link, search results. Fix other annoyances while you’re there.

Downside: $2.50/month after a 7-day free trial.

Good to know

  • This works in Chrome on your computer, not in the YouTube app.
  • Edits are saved to your account, so they follow you to any Chrome where you sign in to Cuttlefox.
  • If YouTube changes its layout and the edit breaks, ask Cuttlefox to fix it.
